Stalingrad (1992)

Memories of the Battle of Stalingrad and the fate of very young German soldiers enticed by the propaganda. Out of 500,000 men sent into the Battle of Stalingrad, just 6,000 would return to Germany.
Produced with substantial funding, the film is firstly an impressive historic reconstruction. And secondly, it invites the audience to follow the lives of simple men, German soldiers, through the battle. Fighting scenes, while present, account for only a minor portion of the film. Instead, the emphasis on men lost in the frenzy of warfare, with their fears, ignorance, doubts and rebellion brewing within them. The aspect of “warfare” at times takes a back seat, leaving way for dialogue between soldiers that focuses on their memories of the country, their perspective on warfare, their day-to-day worries and their means of coming to terms with the horror of war.
