Ulzana's raid (1972)

Starring Burt Lancaster, Bruce Davidson, Joaquin Martinez

Following Apache leader Ulzana’s escape from a reservation, young officer De Buin goes in pursuit. While the Apache, whose son was killed by the Bluecoats, wreaks terror along the way, De Buin must stand up to Scout McIntosh, who is critical of his methods.
The Apache here is impervious to the moral categories that determine the actions of the Whites, which does not detract from his own unique humanity. In 1972, such lucidity was not to be appreciated, and the film will surely never be given the universal recognition it deserves: as a major western that is thoughtful and philosophical, melancholy in the strongest sense of the word, and cruel, recognising the derisory nature of the utopian views of counterculture, and the impossible reconciliation of opposites.” Jean-François Rauger writing in Le Monde.
