The Hostage (2003)

In 1970, British diplomat James Cross is kidnapped by the Front de Libération du Québec. Unlike Pierre Laporte, the other hostage who was assassinated, Cross is released alive. The Hostage is an examination of the human experience of kidnapping and its aftermath, of a man himself hostage to a past not of his choosing. Through the memories of Cross and his family, painful to this day, Leblanc invites us to relive the mood of the time, and hence revealing the human consequences of any extreme ideology. Is it legitimate to sacrifice one soul for the good of the population? To be sure, there are more savage events that would have better served as an illustration of such issues: the Bolshevik revolution, the cultural revolution, fascism… But the beauty of The Hostage lies precisely in its simplicity. The suffering of one human, examined in detail, symbolises the blood shed by innocents the world over.
