To Be Or Not To Be (1942)

Starring Carole Lombard, Jack Benny, Robert Stack

In Poland during the Second World War, a troupe of actors succeeds in foiling a plan by the Gestapo.
The most inspired, sublime satire of Nazism alongside Chaplin’s Great Dictator. This film, released in 1942, is a comedy gem, the quintessence of Lubitsch’s artistry. He himself was forced to comment in the New York Times on 29 March 1942 that “his” Nazis were not the sadistic torturers commonly portrayed, but that they had reached that line: “To them, beating and torture has long since become routine. They speak of it like shopkeepers discussing the sale of a handbag. Their humour revolves around concentration camps and their victims’ suffering.”
