Monty Python and the Holy Graal (1975)
Starring Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Teery Jones, Michael Palin
King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table embark on the quest for the Holy Grail, sitting astride imaginary horses to the sound of knocked-together coconut shells. Initially, the intention was for the knights to ride real horses, but due to a shortage of budget, they were forced to pretend to ride while their entourage bang coconut shells together to imitate the sound of hooves (a nod and a wink to the technique used to produce this sound in radio productions).
The Holy Grail is a British comedy directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones, both members of the Monty Python troupe. They and their fellow Pythons (John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman) are the only actors in the film and make no bones about playing several parts simultaneously.
Its French release (distributed by Yves Robert) was accompanied by the slogan: “the film that makes Ben-Hur look like a documentary”.
