Small Soldiers (1998)

Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Frank Langella, Alan Abernathy

Alan Abernathy is the son of a toy store owner selling somewhat old-fashioned toys. He lives in a small town in Ohio. Expelled from school for a playing prank, he decides to regain his father’s respect by selling new toys: action figures.
With Small Soldiers, Joe Dante resumes a specific, ironic critique of American society, in the guise of teenage entertainment. His great friend Spielberg is taken down a peg or two […] It is a pleasure to see a US film-maker still able to mould teenage entertainment to his usual theme: how is it that America continually on the point of self-destruction? How is it that the country revolves around sensation: the pending disaster and the leap to salvation?
