A difficult life (1961)

Starring Alberto Sordi, Lea Massari

With a German soldier preparing to assassinate him, Silvio Magnozzi, a writer for an underground newspaper, is saved by Elena. Once the war is over, he finds Elena again and they move to Rome together. Silvio’s radical activities do not make life easy for them and eventually, wearied by poverty, Elena leaves him.
Una vita difficile paints a panorama of fifteen years of Italian life, witnessed through the efforts and failures of a journalist fighting for his democratic ideals. The film has acquired a certain standing as it embraces a perfect transition between critical-minded neorealism and an attitude of derision and ironic cruelty, the hallmark of Italian comedy of the 1960s. One of the finest works of Dino Risi, who delivered therein his first major and truly personal success, with this perfect balance between character-focussed narrative, farce and a darker, more politicised angle.
