THE BATTLE OF STALINGRAD THROUGH THE GERMAN PROPAGANDA POINT OF VIEW (1942-1943)

presented by Nicolas FÉrard, German collection ARCHIVIST (ECPAD)

Synopsis

During the Second World War, photographers drafted into German propaganda troops (Propagandakompanien) by the German Propaganda Ministry amassed a considerable arsenal of audiovisual material.

ECPAD is the repository for the French share of these spoils recovered by the US army and divided among the Allied Forces. It comprises both moving images (1,117 films) and still photography (around 357,000 shots) covering the war in its entirety.

And so, the exceptional footage shot by German propaganda troops during the Battle of Stalingrad offers us a fresh insight into this major turning point in the conflict, forcing us to reflect on approaches used in filming defeat.
